PHNOM PENH--Germany’s new Ambassador to Cambodia Christian Berger said Friday that he hopes to help boost ties between the two countries, according to a German Embassy’s press release.

The ambassador, who arrived in Phnom Penh accompanied by his wife Maria Berger, said that he was pleased to be serving in Cambodia, a country with such a long and rich history.

“I am looking forward to witnessing the Kingdom’s dynamic development”, he said, according to the press release. “Germany and Cambodia are friends. I hope I can contribute to strengthening this friendship.”

Germany has been an important development partner since 1993. A German government report stated last year that the country has provided 398.66 million euros (about $448.5 million) in official development assistance to Cambodia over the last 25 years.

Berger has previously served as Germany’s ambassador to Vietnam and to Laos.
